Queensland is a great place to live, but its climate is hard on the outside of a house. Strong sun, high humidity, summer storms and — closer to the coast — salty air all wear paint down over time. Understanding what you’re up against helps you get an exterior paint job that looks good for longer.
Strong sun and UV
UV exposure is one of the main reasons exterior paint fades and chalks. North- and west-facing walls usually cop the most sun and tend to show wear first. Using a quality exterior paint system designed for Australian conditions, and choosing your colours with fading in mind, helps the finish hold up.
Humidity, rain and mould
Moisture is the other big factor. Damp, shaded areas can grow mould and mildew, and water getting behind paint is a common cause of blistering and peeling. That’s why surfaces need to be cleaned and treated properly before painting, and why painting is planned around the weather — paint needs dry conditions to go on and cure properly.
Salt air near the coast
If you’re close to the beach, salt in the air settles on walls, trims and metal surfaces. Washing surfaces down before painting removes salt build-up so the new coat can bond properly, and paying attention to metal elements helps prevent rust coming through.
Preparation matters more than the paint
Even the best paint will fail early if it’s applied over a poorly prepared surface. Good exterior preparation typically includes:
- Washing down walls, eaves and trims to remove dirt, salt and chalky residue
- Treating mould and mildew
- Scraping back loose or flaking paint
- Filling cracks and gaps, and sanding where needed
- Priming bare or repaired areas before the top coats
Choosing colours for a Queensland home
Lighter colours generally reflect more heat and can show fading less than very dark tones. Darker colours can look striking on feature areas, garage doors and trims. Whatever you choose, look at large samples outside in full sun and in shade before deciding.
Signs your exterior needs repainting
- Faded or chalky walls (paint rubs off on your hand)
- Peeling, blistering or cracking paint
- Mould or dark staining that keeps coming back
- Exposed timber or rust spots on trims and metalwork
Catching these early usually means less repair work later. Have a look at our exterior painting page to see how we prepare and paint homes across South East Queensland.
